Power import from India begins

FROM KUSHTIA: The commercial import of electricity from India has begun Saturday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh inaugurated the process through a video conference.

The premier also inaugurated the foundation stone of Rampal power plant during in Kushtia.  

175 Megawatt power has been added to the national grid Saturday, which will go up to 500 MW by the end of November this year.

In 2010, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh and India regarding import of a total of 500 MW power to the high voltage sub-station of the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) in Bheramara of Kushtia.
