Bangladesh sends letter to India to send back Sheikh Hasina  Awami League president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh has sent a formal letter requesting India to send back Awami League president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled due to student uprisings.

Foreign affairs adviser to the interim government Md. Touhid Hossain shared this information with reporters on Monday (Dec 23).

He said, "We have informed India that her (Sheikh Hasina’s) return is crucial for the sake of the judicial system. This message has been conveyed to the Indian government through diplomatic channels."

Earlier in the day, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said a formal letter was sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to initiate the extradition process of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India.

He made the remark while responding to a question from journalists at an event held at the BGB headquarters in the capital’s Pilkhana, on Monday (Dec 23).

Jahangir Alam said that the process is underway under the prisoner exchange agreement between Bangladesh and India.

On August 5, Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister, fled to India amid a mass uprising led by students and citizens.

Following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, several ministers, MPs, and leaders of the Awami League also fled the country during and after the revolt.
