Journalist leaders, professional protest 'false' case filed by JS whip

Various journalistic associations have protested "false" case filed by Jatiya Sangsad whip and lawmaker from Patiya Shamsul Haque Chowdhury against senior journalists, including, four editors of the East West Media Group (EWMGL) for publishing reports on corruption and misrule committed by him and his family members.

Organised in front of Jatiya Press Club on Wednesday, they also placed a demand for withdrawal of the case within three days.

BMSF general secretary Abu Jafar presided over the human chain and protest rally participated by leaders and activists of journalistic associations alongside general journalists.

They demanded resignation of whip who is allegedly involved in August 21 grenade attack on Awami League rally which had killed 24 leaders and activists of the party including Ivy Rahman and injured the then leader of opposition and now Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Speaking on the occasion, journalist leaders said whip Shamsul and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun are hatching conspiracy to curtail freedom of press and put the government in an awkward situation. The whip and his family members are set to annihilate professional capacity and dignity of the journalists who acted as whistleblowers of many corruptions and misrule committed by them.

On August 18, Jatiya Sangsad Whip Shamsul Haque filed the Tk 500-crore defamation case against 11 people, including, Bangladesh Pratidin Editor and News24 TV CEO Naem Nizam, Kaler Kantho Editor Imdadul Haq Milan, The Daily Sun Editor Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Banglanews24.com Editor Jewel Mazhar and Bangladesh Pratidin reporter Saidur Rahman Rimon.
