Hilsa sellers make Tk750 profit per kg

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined five traders Tk 42,000 for selling per kg of hilsa at Tk 2,200 at Kawran Bazar wholesale fish market.

The traders were found selling hilsa at Tk 2,200 per kg after purchasing it at Tk 1,450, making a profit of Tk 750 per kg.

The price of hilsa fish has increased abnormally in the local markets soon after the government has given approval to export the Bangladesh national fish to India ahead of the Durga Puja.

Noticing the skyrocketing price hike of the hilsa fish, a team of the DNCRP raided the Kawran Bazar Wholesale fish market on Wednesday and claimed to have found a significant difference between the purchasing and selling prices.

The DNCRP team, during the raid, noticed that there was no document related to the purchase of hilsa fish and no proper cash memo kept preserved anywhere in the market, the government agency claimed in a statement on Wednesday.

The traders have been asked to keep proper documents related to the purchase and sale of hilsa fish under their possessions to avoid such a penalty in future, read the statement.
