BNP leader Amir Khasru arrested

The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury from a house in Gulshan of the capital on Friday (November 3) night.

Additional Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Harun Or Rashid confirmed the matter.

Earlier on October 29, police detained BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, after hours after deadly clashes rocked parts of Dhaka

Later at night, a Dhaka court sent Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jail after rejecting his bail.

On October 28, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suspended the grand rally in the capital's Nayapaltan and announced the hartal.

BNP claimed that the rally was suspended as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.

BNP, Jamaat and like-minded parties observed the dawn to dusk countrywide hartal on October 29 in protest of the recent police action during the party's Nayapaltan rally.

Later on October 29, the BNP and Jamaat announced nationwide blockades for three days starting 31 October to press home their one-point demand of immediate resignation of the ruling government.

Police already filed a case against several BNP leaders, including the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

They have been accused, along with numerous others, in a case filed over the vandalism of chief justice's residence on October 28.
