Police arrested Amanullah Aman, the prime suspect in the murder of constable Amirul Islam Parvez during a clash between BNP men and law enforcers on October 28.
Aman was arrested from Mohakhali area on Monday (November 6), said Md Asaduzzaman, chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
Md Asaduzzaman said this while speaking at a press conference at DMP media centre today.
The police official said that Aman is the prime suspect of the murder case.
“He (Aman) not only implemented or led the directives, but also took part in the attack wearing a helmet and carrying a stick,” Asaduzzaman said.
Police are trying to arrest Aman's accomplices, he added.
Aman is the joint secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and former member secretary of the organization’s Dhaka University unit.
Earlier on October 28, the BNP staged a mass rally in Nayapaltan to press for the formation of a non-partisan caretaker government during the election period.
Later on the day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suspended the grand rally in the capital's Nayapaltan and announced the hartal.
BNP claimed that the rally was suspended as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.
On that day, a police box and an ambulance in the police hospital were torched, while a dozen of vehicles were set ablaze.
Besides, the chief justice's residence also came under attack.
Constable Parvez was beaten to death and a Jubo Dal activist was also killed.
