BNP today announced a 48-hour hartal across the country starting Sunday (November 19) to protest the schedule for the next national poll announced by the Election Commission (EC). 

Party Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the announcement at a virtual press briefing on Thursday evening.

The shutdown will begin at 6:00am on Sunday, he said. 

The fifth spell of the countrywide blockades for 48 hours enforced by BNP and allies as part of the ongoing one-point movement passed the second day on Thursday. 

Earlier today, Gono Odhikar Parishad announced a 48-hour hartal starting from Sunday morning demanding the cancellation of the national polls' schedule.

Besies, the Ganatantra Mancha, a combine of six political parties and organisations, also on Thursday announced a 48-hour hartal across Bangladesh for November 19 and November 20.

BNP, Jamaat and like-minded parties already observed the dawn to dusk countrywide hartal on October 29 in protest of the recent police action during the party's Nayapaltan rally.

Earlier on November 15, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that the 12th national parliamentary election will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
