Former minister Zakir put on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, Zakir Hossain, in connection with the murder of electrician Shamim Hawlader.

Shamim was shot dead during the anti-discrimination student movement in Mohammadpur.

On Friday (Oct 25), the remand order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter.

The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Raju Ahmed of Mohammadpur Police Station, had requested a five-day remand for further questioning. In contrast, the defense lawyer sought to cancel the remand and requested bail.

After hearing both sides, the judge decided on a three-day remand.

Shamim Hawlader was fatally shot on July 20 in the Beiribandh area of Mohammadpur during the protests.

Following the incident, his maternal uncle, Zakir Hossain, filed a murder case at the local police station.
