Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a public demonstration demanding the immediate and unconditional release of its Assistant Secretary General, ATM Azharul Islam.
The protest will be held in front of the Chief Advisor’s office on February 25 from 2 PM to 4 PM.
Jamaat’s Secretary General and former Member of Parliament, Golam Parwar announced the program through a statement on Friday (February 21)
He said ATM Azharul Islam's continued imprisonment, despite the fall of the fascist government that had falsely accused and imprisoned him over the last 13 years.
Parwar said that after the fall of the previous regime, many political leaders and activists from anti-fascist parties had been released, leading the nation to expect Azharul Islam’s release as well.
However, despite six months having passed since the interim government assumed power, Azharul Islam has not been freed, which has left the public shocked and perplexed, he said.
Jamaat's Amir, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, is expected to attend the demonstration as the chief guest.
The party also urged citizens to join the protest and work towards ensuring the release of ATM Azharul Islam.
Earlier, on Thursday (February 20), Dr. Shafiqur Rahman announced on his verified Facebook page that he himself would go to the court premises on February 25 to demand Azharul Islam's release and stated that he is ready to be arrested.
