DHAKA: A ban on BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique’s entry into USA was recommended by a confidential cable from US embassy in Dhaka, says Wikileaks.
According to the report, the cable was sent from Dhaka to the State Department on November 3 in 2008.
‘The Embassy believes Tarique is guilty of egregious political corruption that has had a serious adverse effect on US national interests mentioned in Section 4 of the proclamation, namely the stability of democratic institutions and US foreign assistance goals,’ said the cable which was marked ‘confidential’.
Several media outlets published the report on Tuesday.
However, the Embassy made it clear that they did not wish to place a similar ban on Tarique wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, their daughter, Zaima, or Tarique’s mother Khaleda Zia, BNP chairperson and also a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
The report further said, Tarique Rahman was described as ‘the notorious and widely feared son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’.
