A local BNP leader died on Wednesday night, eight days after he was injured in a clash between rival factions of the party in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila.
The deceased, Sultan (45), son of the late Afsar Ali and a resident of Khalisha Para, served as the joint secretary of BNP Ward No. 1 for Gachiar Para and Khalisha Para.
According to police and locals, the dispute erupted on October 23, with two BNP groups clashing over longstanding enmities and a struggle for dominance in the Natuda union area.
The violence left around five to six people injured from both sides.
Sultan, critically injured during the altercation, was first taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he breathed his last night while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, Palash filed a case on October 28, naming five individuals.
Police have since arrested one suspect, Sohrab (60), son of Bharsa Ali from Gachiar Para, who was listed as an accused in the case.
Damurhuda Model Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC), Humayun Kabir, confirmed the arrest and said that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the clash.
