A court in Dhaka today granted a five-day police remand for Md Shahed Ahmmed Majumder, son of former state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder.
Shahed was arrested Saturday night by the Counter Terrorism Unit from a house in Niketon, Gulshan, over allegations of financing activities of the recently suspended Awami League. Police filed a case against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
He was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate with a petition seeking a 10-day remand. While Shahed’s lawyers opposed the remand and filed a bail petition, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman approved a five-day remand and rejected the bail plea.
The case relates to an incident on September 12, when a group of Awami League and front organization activists, recently banned Bangladesh Chhatra League members, gathered near Dr Fazle Rabbi Park in Gulshan, conducted a procession, chanted anti-government slogans, and attempted to damage vehicles, creating panic among residents.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Md Mahbub Hussain of Gulshan Thana filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act on September 13.
