A Dhaka court today sent Muladi Mayor and Barishal Awami League vice-president Shafiquzzaman Rubel to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly raising provocative slogans.
Rubel, also the vice-president of Muladi Upazila Awami League, was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court after being arrested by the Detective Branch of police from Gulshan earlier in the day.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam rejected his bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail.
According to case documents, Rubel, along with leaders and activists of Awami League and its banned student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), brought out a procession on April 22 in Gulshan’s Jabbar Tower area, chanting provocative slogans.
On the same day, police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, with Gulshan Police Station.
