Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Tuesday (Oct 7) called on teachers to support the party in the upcoming elections to build a knowledge- and merit-based state.
He said that teachers, as the most conscious segment of society, are crucial for the country’s development and for implementing BNP’s plans.
Tarique Rahman was speaking virtually at a teachers’ rally held at Suhrawardy Udyan on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day.
He said that if BNP comes to power, a high-level commission would be formed to ensure teachers’ financial security and nationalize their positions. He also promised to transform educational institutions and universities into hubs of education and research, focusing on technical and practical learning from the school level.
“The biggest challenge today is for Bangladesh to survive as an influential nation-state with dignity. To achieve this, we must be enriched in talent, knowledge, and science, and establish a knowledge-based state and society,” he said.
Highlighting the vital role of teachers, Tarique Rahman cited Albert Einstein, noting that teachers awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. He stressed the need to ensure financial security, social respect, and competitiveness for teachers, particularly at the primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels, including madrasas.
He also proposed inviting at least one teacher to state events on national days, such as Independence Day or Victory Day, to reflect their respected status in society. He said that BNP has already begun formulating practical action plans with experts to modernize the education system, ensuring teachers can serve as confident role models for students.
Tarique Rahman reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to establishing an Education Reform Commission to reorganize the curriculum toward work-oriented, technical, and practical education while preserving moral, religious, and social values.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, former State Minister for Education Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon, National University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. ASM Amanullah, and other leaders also spoke at the rally.
This marks BNP’s continued emphasis on education as a cornerstone for national development and teacher empowerment.
