Statement on ‘July Fighters’ aired selectively: Salahuddin

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed today clarified that his remarks on the ‘July Fighters’, linked to a clash during the signing of the July National Charter, were partly and selectively published, creating confusion.

Speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Salahuddin said, “My statement that was broadcast, calling the ‘July Fighters’ cohorts of fascism, was truncated and aired partially. I urge everyone not to circulate my statement in a shortened form.”

He emphasized that his intention was to honour the July Fighters, not to criticize them, adding, “We always respect those who participated in the July Uprising. They are our strength, and no one should belittle or tarnish their honour.”

Salahuddin also commented on the disorder at the July National Charter signing ceremony on Friday, noting that some unruly individuals created chaos, but he does not believe the July Fighters were responsible.

He welcomed a call from another political party for clarification and said, “Confusion has been created around my statement, but we don’t want a stain of infamy on our unity. Careful communication is necessary.”

On the referendum, he said the issue can be discussed again if required, urging the government to issue a gazette notification after due consideration.

Regarding the recent Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Cargo Village fire, Salahuddin said, “The fire is under investigation. Some incidents might be linked to the same source or groups aiming to create instability, but nothing can be confirmed before the investigation concludes.”
