PM concerned for Buriganga pollution

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday, expressing her concern, said that she cannot control her tears after seeing the water of Buriganga River.

The premier, also ruling Awami League president, came up with the assertion while she was visiting the environment and forest ministry in the morning.

She said that some 135 garbage and sewerage lines of the city flowed out at the river of Buriganga. The wastes of the city are dumped into the river that is painful, she added.

Sheikh Hasina further said the sewerage lines cannot be closed as the city will be polluted then.

A wall can be set up at the exit point of sewerage lines on the bank of the river where Environment Treatment Plant (ETP) can be set up for purification of water and then flow it to river rather draining strait way, she added.

It might be expensive but its value is not more than the environment, the PM added.

She also asked the shipping ministry to work jointly with the environment and forest ministry in this regard.

She also mentioned the Hatirjheel ETP project in the city in purifying the water of the lake.

Ignoring the harmful project of constructing Box Culvert in the city Sheikh Hasina said that earlier there were several canals and lakes in Dhaka that were environment friendly.

Those canals and lakes are filled at present so rain water is seen logging on the city roads.

However, the Prime Minister came to the environment ministry as a part of her regular visits to several ministries.
