DHAKA: BNP-backed ward councilors of Dhaka Monday went on a six-hour fast to press the government for disclosing forthwith the whereabouts of their colleague Chowdhury Alam.
Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka is leading the token hunger strike that began at 11am at the National Press Club audi+torium. Women councilors from reserved seats also joined the fast.
Mayor Khoka, speaking at the outset, said, “We want the DCC ward number-86 councilor, Chowdhury Alam, be rescued and want to see the government active in this regard.”
Besides about 70 councilors of Dhaka city, councilors loyal to the opposition party from Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet joined in the programme.
BNP standing committee member MK Anwar, Opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farooque, former Rajshahi Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu, former Barisal Mayor Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Alam’s wife expressed solidarity with the demonstration.
The token hunger strike will continue till 5pm.
