DHAKA:  Jamaat-called protest rallies across the country are on steam Monday to protest what the beleaguered Islamic party said unleashing repression on top party leaders “in the name of remand”.

All units of the party were instructed to observe the protest programme announced by the Jamaat-e-Islami high command that stood in after the arrest of its top leaders.

Reports reaching banglanews24.com.bd newsroom from different parts of the country say the Jamaat activists could hardly stand to rally for the protest as the government has taken a hard line in dealing with opposition agitation.

Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami, Secretary-General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Nayebe Ameer (vice-president) Delwar Hossain Sayedee were arrested on June 29 on charges of hurting religious sentiments of Muslims though their blasphemous comments.

Later, party assistant secretaries-general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Mollah were arrested from the High Court gate on July 13 in a murder-and-arson case filed with Pallabi thana by an injured freedom fighter in January 2008.
