DHAKA: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday urged the government to sit for a dialogue over for holding credible, neutral and acceptable elections.
The BNP chief made the plea while addressing a rally organized by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal marking victory day at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the city in the evening.
Khaleda said, “The people did not cast their vote in January 5 national elections. The alliance led by Awami League (AL) formed illegal government managing majority in the election.”
But, the other parties, including BNP did not participate in the farcical election as it was not followed by democracy and constitution. The AL also took the people’s rights, she added.
The former prime minister urged for an election where all parties can participate and election commissioner, administration, police will be neutral.
Khaleda also threatened that the incumbent government will be swept away like a house of cards if their demands denied.
She said the people from all walks of life participated in the liberation war. But after achieving independence, a particular party tried to highlight the success in the war as their own.
However, the victory was not an achievement by any party, it was national achievement, she observed.
Khaleda Zia also said they would provide all the facilities to the freedom fighters if her party is voted to power.
President Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat of by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal chaired the meeting where BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and publicity secretary Zainul Abedin Farrqoue were among others present at the program.
