103 ‘anarchists’ held in 5 districts

DHAKA: Law enforcers in nightlong drives detained at least 103 suspected anarchists, including leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, from five districts.

Without disclosing the identities, police Saturday claimed that the detainees were involved in sabotages during hartals and nonstop blockade.

District correspondents report:

JESSORE: Lawmen detained 43 people from eight upazilas of the district, said Ariful Haque, additional superintendent of police of Jessore.

KHULNA: Police in regular drive rounded up 26 people, including two BNP men and one Jamaat man in the district, said Moniruzzaman Mithu, additional deputy commissioner of special branch of Khulna Metropolitan Police.
 
CHITTAGONG: Police detained here 12 BNP-Jamaat men from different areas of the district.

Sources told banglanews that there are four BNP activists among the detainees while rests are Jamaat-Shibir men.

MANIKGANJ: At least eight BNP leaders-activists were held in nightlong drives here.

District Police’s special branch (SB) member Salam Hossain confirmed the matter.

GAIBANDHA: Joint forces arrested 14 BNP-Jamaat activists from different areas of the district.

According to the sources, the joint forces were consisting of members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police.

Confirming the matter, district police’s additional superintendent of police (ASP) Mosharraf Hossain said that all the detainees are accused of violence including burning people through hurling petrol bombs.
