20-party hartal rolls into last day

DHAKA: The 120-hour hartal, enforced by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led (BNP) 20-party alliance, has rolled into the fifth and last day across the country on Thursday.

The shutdown began at 6:00am on Sunday and set to end at 6:00am on Wednesday, which was later extended to 6:00am Friday, coupled with a nationwide road-rail-waterway blockade for indefinite period.

Stray acts of sabotages were reported at the different parts of the country till the morning.

Blockade and hartal supporters hurled cocktail bomb targeting a truck in Osmaninagar of Sylhet city Wednesday night.

Two people sustained injuries after miscreants exploded a pair of cocktail bombs targeting a passenger bus in Charghat of Rajshahi.

A staff bus was set afire in Export Processing Zone area on Chittagong at Wednesday night. Miscreants hurled petrol bombs separately at two bus of Jahangirnagar University.

On Tuesday, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, through press release, announced that the alliance extended its nationwide shutdown from 72-hour to 120-hour protesting “false” cases against the party leaders, including BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The shutdown was also extended protesting the mass killing by joint forces, indiscriminate murder, kidnaps, attacks and mass arrest of 20-party alliance leaders.
