112 detained in anti-sabotage drives

JESSORE & RANGPUR: Police, in nightlong drives, rounded up 112 suspected anarchists, including BNP-Jamaat activists from fifteen upazilas and other areas of the two districts.

Jessore police control room source said among the 43 detainees, all but one BNP activist and one Jamaat-e-Islami activist were accused in different cases.

The detainees would be produced before district court in afternoon.

In Rangpur, law enforcers, in last 12-hour drive till Sunday noon, picked up 69 people, including activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, for their alleged involvement in sabotages and anarchism.

Shariful Islam, officer of Rangpur Detective Branch of Police, said police carried out drives in Kownia, Taraganj, Badarganj, Birganj, Mithapukur, Pirgachha, Pirgachara and different areas of Rangpur city.

The detainees --20 are Jamaat men, five are BNP men and rests are drag peddlers, fugitive accused and extortionists—were sent to jail by the district court, he added.
