New committee for Dhaka city AL soon

DHAKA: New committee for Dhaka City Awami League, which remains pending for a long time, will be announced soon. After the city corporation election, the issue was discussed in the meeting of party's policy making forum, said party sources.

After the city election, the party high-ups are now thought to declare new committee to make the organization more active said the sources.

Meanwhile, two and a half years passed after the summit, Dhaka City Awami League is still running by the old committee. Not only metropolitan unit, Thana and ward committees were also expired.

Besides, one year after the council, Thana and Ward units are yet to get new committee.

Awami League leaders said announcement of a new committee for party’s city unit remained pending as different issues including national election, movement of the opposition, Dhaka City Corporation elections came to the forefront.

After just six months, second term of the old committee will also expire and the party has to hold council. However, there is no problem to declare the new committee.

According to some AL leaders, Party president Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already discussed the issue of making new committee for Dhaka city with them.

The leaders said two committees will be declared for the Dhaka north and south city units. After formation of metropolitan unit committee, the committees for Thana and ward units will be declared.

However, leaders did not say anything specific about the date of announcement of the new committee.

Several leaders of the Awami League said party President Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will decide about the committee for Dhaka city. None is able to say when it will be announced. However, they said it could be soon.

According to the party's constitution, after the each three years, every unit is to hold council to form new committee. Last Dhaka City Awami League council was held on December 27, 2012. After the Council, the Awami League, in its Central Working Committee meeting, took a decision that the old committee will remain in force and will work until new committee was formed.

After that Dhaka City Awami League is moving on with the old committee.
