MAGURA: Ruling Awami League (AL)-backed candidate Rostam Ali has won the by-election for Magura Sadar Upazila chairman post on Tuesday.
With the symbol of ‘Horse’, Rostam bagged 55,187 votes while his nearest BNP-backed candidate Ali Ahmed got 22,091 votes with ‘Motorcycle’ symbol.
Returning officer Syed Rabiul Islam announced the unofficial result at 7:40pm at Magura Sadar Upazila auditorium after the daylong election.
However, two platoons Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), three platoons Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) along with police members were deployed in the poll area.
The post of chairman was vacant after Magura Sadar Upazila Parisad chairman Nazim Uddin (70) had died of cancer on April 22.
