LAXMIPUR: Miscreants shot dead former vice-president of Chandraganj union Awami League (AL) on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Omar Faruq, 42, who is also the convener of Chandraganj Thana Santras Nirmul Committee.

Quoting witnesses, Chandraganj Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Humayun Kabir told banglanews several masked miscreants shot the AL leader at Paschim Latifpur area of the thana around 11:00 am, leaving him critically injured.

He succumbed to his injuries on way to Noakhali Medical College and Hospital, he added.

Police and family members suspected he might be killed over his speech against armed terror groups during the Chandraganh Thana inaugural ceremony on August 31.

OC Humayun Kabir said they deployed a large number of police members in the area to thwart any untoward situation.

“Police has started drives to detain the persons involved with the incident,” he added.
