NILPHAMARI: A district court on Wednesday sent 62 leaders and activists of local unit BNP to jail in a case filed over the attack on the motorcade of cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor at Ramganj Bazar of sadar upazila of Nilphamari district on December 14 of 2013.
Judge Motaharat Akhter Bhuiyan of additional chief judicial magistrate court of Nilphamari passed the order refusing the bail plea filed by the accused after appearing before the court at noon.
The accused include upazila unit BNP vice-president Ashraf Ali, Laxmichap union BNP secretary Abdul Wahab and Tupamari union Swechhasebok Dal president Abdur Rahim.
Confirming the matter, Nilphamari Sadar Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Shahjahan Pasha told banglanews that out of 217 accused, as many as 63, including these 62, are in the jail.
Of the rest, 59 are on bail and others are fugitive, he added.
On December 12 of 2013, Jamaat and its student wing Chhatra Shibir men conducted violence in Laxmichap, Tupamari and other areas protesting the death sentence of their party assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah in a case filed for crimes against humanity.
On December 14, the then lawmaker Asaduzzaman Noor, current cabinet member, went to visit the area.
BNP-Jamaat men attacked his motorcade while returning from there. The attack killed five including four leaders and activists of ruling Awami League.
Sadar Thana OC Babul Akhter filed a case mentioning names of 21 people and 2,500 others.
Later, police submitted chargesheet against 217, including sadar upazila unit Jamaat Ameer Khairul Anam.
