DHAKA: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld its previous verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mujahid that upheld death penalty given by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
A 4-member full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order rejecting his plea for reviewing death penalty for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
The other members were Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain.
Through the verdict, the execution of Mujahid has reached at final stage. Now last stage will be appeal for Presidential mercy.
If he does not seek mercy from President or President rejects his plea, there will be no legal bar for the government to execute Mujahid for his crimes against humanity.
As per the government decision, jail authorizes will execute the verdict following legal procedure.
Earlier, the hearing of review petition of the condemned war criminal ended On Tuesday.
Defence lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and attorney general Mahbubey Alam presented their arguments for respective side.
Earlier, on July 17 of 2013, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 handed down death sentence to Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mujahid for his crimes against humanity during the country’s war of independence in 1971.
Later, he appealed against the verdict on August 11 of that year.
The Appellate Division upheld the ICT verdict against Mujahid on June 16.
The full verdict was published on September 30. Later on October 1, Dhaka Central Jail authorities read out the verdict to him.
On October 14, Mujahid submitted review petition of the verdict.
