DHAKA: The Election Commission has finalized the number legal candidates from parties that are vying in the approaching polls in 234 municipalities of the country.
The number of legal candidates from ruling Awami League is 231 and BNP’s legal candidates are 224. Besides, the number of legal candidates from Jatiya Party (JP) is 85.
The election management division of EC prepared a report on it. EC deputy secretary M Samsul Alam confirmed the matter to banglanews.
A total of 19 parties have been participating in the polls. The number of legal candidates from Liberal Democratic Party is 2, Jatiya Party-JP is 6, Communist Party of Bangladesh is 4, Workers Party of Bangladesh is 7, Bikalpa Dhara is 1 and Bangladesh Tariqat Federation has 1.
Besides, 1 from BNF, 24 from JASAD, 1 from Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, 1 from Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BaSad), 16 from NPP, 1 from PDP, 2 from Islami Oikya Jote, 56 from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, 3 from Bangladesh Islami Front, 1 from Bangladesh Biplobi Workers’ Party and 5 from Khelafat Majlish were selected as legal candidates.
On the other hand, as many as 13,626 aspirants sub,itted nomination papers for vying for councilor posts. Of them, 898 were nomination papers were discarded.
However, the number of candidates, who will compete in the municipal polls, will be finalized after December 13, the last date of withdrawal of candidacy, he added.
The municipal polls will be held on December 30.
