DHAKA: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said BNP-led 20-party alliance will carry out the campaign jointly in the forthcoming municipal election, slated for December 30.

He made this disclosure after a meeting of secretaries general of 20-party arranged at BNP chairperson’s political office in city’s Gulshan area on Saturday.

The hour-long meeting, starting from 11:00am, was presided over convener of 20-party alliance Mirza Fakhrul.

At press briefing, Fakhrul said, ‘Leaders of the alliance have decided to carry out campaigns jointly for the upcoming municipal election’.

The alliance convener declined to reply to a query whether alliance leaders will carry out campaign for Jamaat candidates.

The 20-party has already started joint campaign in Rangpur-Dinajpur, Fakhrul added.

At the briefing, Fakhrul urged election commission (EC) to take action to keep the election free from government intervention and to hold the election in a free and fair manner.

He also urged law enforcers not to arrest leaders-activists of BNP-led alliance during the municipal election.

The BNP leader said, ‘As the country’s democracy is at stake, BNP has joined the election to restore the democracy. It is the part of our movement for restoring democracy’.

Jatiya Party (Jafar) secretary general Mostafa Jamal Haider, LDP secretary general Dr Redwan Ahmed, Khelafat Majlis secretary general Ahmed Abdul Kader, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA) secretary general Khandker Lutfar Rahaman, NAP secretary general Golam Mustafa, Muslim League secretary general Shiekh Zulfikar Bulbul, BL secretary general Khokan Chandra Das, Kalyan Party’s Aminur Rahman, Samyabadi Dal secretary general  Syed Ahmed and Labour Party secretary general Hamdullah Al Mehdi, among others, attended the meeting.

But, Jamaat-e-Islami, one of the key allies of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, skipped the meeting.
