Pro-BNP lawyers protest on court premises

DHAKA: Pro-BNP lawyers staged demonstrations at the premises of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court and the High Court on Monday (January 25) protesting summon order against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in a sedition case.

Earlier in the day, former secretary of Supreme Court Lawyers Association Dr Momtaz Uddin Mehedi has filed a sedition case to the CMM court against Khaleda Zia for her remark on the number of martyrs in war of independence.

After the hearing of this case, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Rashed Talukdar summoned Khaleda Zia asking her to appear before the court on March 3.

Soon after filing the case, the pro-BNP lawyers have started to demonstrate on the CMM court premise.  After short break during the hearing, they have resumed protest against summon order.

They chanted slogans demanding the withdrawal of the case and summon order.

A number of 25/30 lawyers, led-by Advocate Sanaullah Mia, have been continued the protest.

Moreover, the pro-BNP lawyers have called for a protest rally as well.

Earlier on December 21, 2015, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at a rally of freedom fighters commented that there is a controversy regarding the number of martyrs of country’s war of independence.

On December 23, Momtaj Uddin Ahmed sent a legal notice to withdraw her comment mentioning her mentality of ‘sedition’.
