Shibir leader killed in Jhenaidah ‘gunfight’

JHENAIDAH: A Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, leader was killed and two cops injured in a “gunfight” between police and a gang of miscreants in Charmail area of Sadar upazila of the district early Tuesday (July 19).

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam alias Mamun, 24, a student of Islamic University, Kushtia and son of one Lutfur Rahman, hailed from Putimari village under Shailkupa upazila of the district.

Confirming the matter, Jenaidah additional police super Azbahar Ali Sheikh told banglanews that a gang of miscreants opened firing and threw hand grenades on a patrol police team in the area around 3:00am.

Police also returned fire to defend themselves, leaving Saiful Islam dead, he added.

Meanwhile, police recovered a shutter gun, five hand grenades, bullets, and two local machetes from the spot, ASP Azbahar Ali Sheikh added.

“The body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. His family members identified the body here,” he added.

He further said the deceased was the secretary of Bhotai area of the upazila.
