Hasina’s speech a threat to democracy: Fakhrul

DHAKA: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday (October 24) commented that ruling Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina’s speech is a threat to democracy.

Fakhrul made the comment while addressing the 15th death anniversary of former lawmaker Afsar Ahmed Siddique, vice-chairman to BNP, at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the afternoon.

Afsar Ahmed Siddique Foundation organized the discussion.

He said: “During the AL national council, Sheikh Hasina said BNP will not be allowed to come to power. Once again, AL must come to power. This clearly indicates- what they want and where is the state of the country’s democracy.”

Slamming the election commission (EC), the BNP leader said they (EC) are busy in implementing the blueprint of the government.

“This election commission has to be tried,” he added.

Criticizing the ruling AL government, Fakhrul also said they are dreaming to stay in power till 2041 through undemocratic means.

Terming the government as unelected, he said they have snatched people’s right to vote and right to speech. “This government has to be dethroned through national unity.”

BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, party’s Vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu and chairperson’s adviser Habibur Rahman Habib also, among others, addressed the discussion.
