EC reformation mandatory, says Nazul Huda

DHAKA: Former Communications Minister Barrister Nazmul Huda on Saturday said the reformation of the Election Commission (EC) is mandatory so that all political parties can participate in the next general polls.

“The incumbent election commission failed to ensure participation of all political parties in the next general election because some parties like BNP, Jatiya Party have questioned their impartiality and expressed no-confidence,” he said.

The senior politician of the country came up with the observation in a statement.

He said, “A free and fair election is possible only if the EC can be made independent and impartial, irrespective of whoever forms government during the period of election.”

The former president of Supreme Court Bar Association also observed that election commission must act independently and impartially as this is a constitutional commitment.

In the statement, he said, “According to the section 119 of the Constitution, President or Government can vest various administrative power and duties to the EC during elections.”
