DHAKA: Opposition BNP standing committee member Barrister Maudud Ahmed categorically said whether the government amended the constitution or not, election would take place and BNP would win.

He came up with the assertion while addressing a programme, arranged on the occasion of the 29th founding anniversary of Zia Sangskritik Sangathan (ZSS) and giving Zia Sommanona Award at National Press Club on Friday evening.

Barrister Maudud said, “Next general will be held under non-partisan caretaker government, whether the Constitution is amended or not and Awami League has to bear the liability.”

BNP leader also said: “Awami League has taken steps to cross the ongoing political crisis amending the Constitution unilaterally. This has challenged the Constitution.”

The veteran politician again said: “There won’t be any democracy in the country if the Constitutional crisis is not amended.”

Maudud further added: “Government should amend the Constitution within its tenure of January 24, if they do not do so in the current session of Jatiya Sangshad.”

He also warned that otherwise the Awami League government might have to face the same fate of dictator Ershad.  

Maudud added that if it is necessary, the election can be held by going beyond the sections and clauses of the Constitution.

With ZSS president Abul Hashem Rana in the chair, Abdullah Al Noman, Advocate Sana Ullah Mia, journalist Saukat Mahmud also addressed the programme.
