Public transport movement to continue in Eid: Quader

DHAKA: Clearing the confusion about public transport movement during Eid-ul-Azha, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said all public transport will be operated during the Eid vacation.

However, movement of goods-laden vehicles will be suspended for three days before and after Eid, he said.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said it in a video message on Thursday (July 16).

Earlier on Wednesday, news broke that public transport will be suspended for nine days during Eid after State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said it in a meeting. Later he corrected the issue saying it is not the public transport but ferry services for goods-laden vehicles will be suspended during Eid.

In responding to the mix-up, Quader said: “Public transport will be operated as usual across the country. Only goods-laden vehicle plying will be suspended only for three days. However, vehicles carrying medicines, perishable goods, garments products, cattle and other emergency commodities will be free from this restriction.”

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority will issue a circular with details in this regard, he said.

In the message, Quader also urged everyone to maintain health guidelines during Eid travel. “If extreme precautions are not maintained, the coronavirus pandemic situation could turn for worse,” he warned.
