New Market clashes: BNP leader Makbul on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court today (April 23) placed BNP leader Makbul Hossain Sarder on a three-day remand in a case filed for obstructing police to perform duties and vandalizing shops.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid issued the order after New Market Police Station inspector Arpito Thankur had produced the opposition leader before the court this morning with a seven-day remand plea.

He was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence in the capital on Friday afternoon. Makbul is the former president of New Market Thana BNP and member of Dhaka City South BNP Convening Committee.

Makbul Hossain has been made No. 1 accused in the case filed by the police.

Intelligence report reveals that several BNP leaders and activists, including Makbul, allegedly instigated both the traders and students of Dhaka College to spread violence from the beginning of the clashes. Makbul is the owner of two fast food shops -- Welcome and Capital. The clashes ensued when the employees of these two fast food shops got involved in clashes.

The clashes were traced back to an altercation at an eatery in the New Market on Monday (April 18) night.

The sporadic fights throughout the next day left two people dead and more than 50 people injured.
