Muhith laid to rest in Sylhet

Former Bangladesh finance minister and Awami League advisory council member Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Sylhet on Sunday.

Before burial at Rainagar, his last namaz-e-janaza was held at Sylhet Government Alia Madrasah after Zohr prayers. 

People from all walks of life paid last respects to Muhith, one of the giants of Bangladesh's political arena whose role stretches through the entire history of independent Bangladesh, at Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar around 12 noon.

Earlier, his body reached Sylhet on Saturday night where people were waiting to see one of the region's proudest sons for the last time.

One of the country's longest-serving finance ministers, Muhith breathed his last at the United Hospital in Dhaka on early Saturday at the age of 88.

People of all walks of life today paid glowing tributes to former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital Dhaka on Saturday.

On behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid, his Military Secretary Major General SM Salahuddin Islam and on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her Military Secretary Brigadier General Kabir Ahmed paid glowing tributes to Muhith by placing wreaths at his coffin.

On behalf of Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Sergeant at Arms Commodore M Nayeem Rahman laid wreath at Muhith's coffin.

Muhith's brother Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen along with other family members were present on the occasion.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President and Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Hasanul Haq Inu also paid their last tributes to Muhith.

Different political, social and cultural organizations and professional bodies and individuals also paid tributes to the former finance minister.
