GCC mayor's suspension: HC defers verdict delivery for 4th time

The High Court (HC) on Sunday (May 14) postponed for the fourth time the date for delivering its verdict in a writ petition filed challenging the validity of the suspension order made against Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam.

According to the information, this time HC postponed the date for a period of two weeks.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Jafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order following an appeal submitted by Jahangir's lawyer.

Earlier, on May 2, the High Court postponed the date for delivering the verdict and fixed Sunday.

In September 2021, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments about Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyred freedom fighters at a program went viral on social media.

On November 19 of that year, the ruling Awami League expelled Jahangir Alam from the party over the incident. He was also suspended from the post of GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later.

The High Court issued a rule following a writ filed by Jahangir, asking why the decision of the LGRD ministry to suspend Jahangir from the mayoral post would not be declared illegal.
