A suspected smuggler was arrested for smuggling goods including gold at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram.

The arrestee Mohammad Rezaul Karim, a resident of Maheskhali of Cox’s Bazar arrived at Chattogram Airport at 8:58 am on Sunday (August 27), from Dubai on Fly Dubai Airlines flight number FZ-563.

The gold was hidden in the handle of a frypan and the mouth of a perfume bottle, according to airport authorities.

The sources also said Rezaul first paid Tk 40,000 tax on a gold bar and was crossing the customs hall with the baggage. Later, based on secret information, the NSI and customs detectives at the airport challenged the passenger and searched him.

After searching him, 1 gold bar (24 carats, 116.5 grams), 100 grams of gold ornaments (22 carats), 3 gold rings (24 carats, 88 grams), 2 gold bars (24 carats, 233 grams) totaling 539.5 grams of gold and 2 mobile phones (Samsung galaxy s21), 1 laptop (Dell) and 2 cartons of cigarettes (Easy Lights) were recovered from his possession, said airport sources.

The market value of recovered goods is Tk 47, 71,365, said airport security authority.

Airport officials said that a criminal case will be filed against him by the customs detective at Patenga Model Police Station.
