Winners of major Awards in 2013

DHAKA: Winners of the major awards including Nobel, Oscar, Pulitzer and Man Booker were also in discussions among people. Banglanews gives the names of the winners of above mentioned prizes with a few others.

Nobel

Francois Englert and Peter W Higgs jointly won the award for physics; Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel trio jointly won the award for chemistry and James E. Rothman, Randy W Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof jointly won Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Canadian author Alice Munro won the prize for literature. The Nobel Peace Prize went to The OPCW, the body overseeing destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons and the prize in economics went to another trio Eugene Fama, Lars Peter Hansen and Robert Shiller.

Pulitzer

This year’s Pulitzer Prize winners for journalism were Sun Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale, FL, California Watch and The Washington Post in Public Service sector; The Denver Post Staff and Hartford Courant Staff in Breaking News Reporting; David Barstow and Alejandra Xanic von Bertrab of The New York Times, Patricia Callahan, Sam Roe, and Michael Hawthorne of the Chicago Tribune and Alexandra Zayas of the Tampa Bay Times won the Pulitzer in Investigative Reporting.

The New York Times Staff, Dan Egan of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Tony Bartelme of The Post and Courier, Charleston, SC in Explanatory Reporting; David Barboza of The New York Times, The Associated Press Staff and Richard Marosi of the Los Angeles Times won the prize in International Reporting.


Oscar

‘Argo’ directed by Benjamin Géza Affleck-Boldt, better known as Ben Affleck, won the Best Picture award while Ang Lee won the 85th Academy Award for Best Director for ‘Life of Pi’. Daniel Day-Lewis made Oscar’s history by winning a third Best Actor award for Lincoln and Jennifer Lawrence won best actress award for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.

Austrian film ‘Amour’ was the Best Foreign film for this year.

Man Booker

Eleanor Catton has become the youngest writer to win the Man Booker Prize, with the longest novel to triumph in the award.

Catton, 28, from New Zealand, was awarded the £50,000 prize by the Duchess of Cornwall at a ceremony in Guildhall in London.

Grammy

Gotye and Kimbra won the 55th Annual Grammy Awards for "Somebody That I Used to Know", becoming the second Australian and first New Zealand act to win the award.

Mumford & Sons won the Album of the Year for Babel, and Fun won the Song of the Year (with Jeff Bhasker) for "We Are Young" as well as the Best New Artist.

Kelly Clarkson won the Best Pop Vocal Album for Stronger, becoming the first and only artist to win the award twice.

The Recording Academy introduced three new categories to the 78 awards previously presented at the 54th ceremony—Best Classical Compendium, Best Latin Jazz Album, and Best Urban Contemporary Album, bringing it to a total of 81 awards

Miss Universe

A 25-year-old Venezuelan television presenter, Gabriela Isler, on November 10 was crowned Miss Universe in Moscow in a glittering ceremony.

Judges, including rock star Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, picked the winner from a total of 86 contestants at the show.

Miss World

Miss Philippines Megan Young was crowned the winner of the 2013, the 63rd edition of the Miss World pageant, in Indonesia. This is the first time the Philippines won the title of Miss World.
