Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained former panel mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Asadur Rahman Kiran early Tuesday (Nov 19) while he was attempting to flee to India through the Shikarpur border in Sharsha upazila of Jashore.
Kiran is the vice-president of the Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League and a former commissioner of Ward 43 of Gazipur City Corporation.
Lt Col Saifullah Siddiqui, commander of the Jashore-49 BGB Battalion, confirmed the matter.
He said they acted on a tip-off that the Awami League leader was planning to escape to India through the Sharsha border. Security was tightened, and Kiran was detained at the Shikarpur border area during the early hours of Tuesday, though his accomplice managed to flee.
During interrogation, Kiran revealed that he had paid Tk 1 lakh to a human trafficker named Noor Nabi from Ramchandrapur village to help him cross the border. Efforts are underway to apprehend the trafficker.
The detainee has been handed over to Sharsha Police Station after a case was filed against him, added the BGB official.
