Protesters storm, torch Sheikh Mujib’s Dhanmondi 32 residence

Agitated students set fire to the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital after vandalizing it on Wednesday (February 5) night.

The protesters gathered at the location around 8:00pm, chanting slogans.

They took to the streets in protest against the announcement that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in the recent uprising, would deliver a speech at a virtual event of the banned organisation Chhatra League.

According to eyewitnesses, small processions of students had started gathering near Dhanmondi 32 road before evening. Around 8:00pm, the protesters broke into residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Some of them vandalized doors and windows, shattered glass panes, and removed bricks from the building. Later, they set the premises on fire.

A large number of police personnel were deployed at Russell Square and nearby roads to maintain law and order.

Dhanmondi 32’s House No. 10 was the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman until his assassination on August 15, 1975. The house was later turned into the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.
