The UN fact-finding mission investigating last year’s July-August uprising is set to disclose its findings at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday noon, according to sources.
UN investigators have reportedly found that the ousted Awami League government played a direct role in instigating violence against peaceful anti-fascist protesters and was also involved in crimes against humanity during the nationwide demonstrations.
This marks the first UN-led investigation into criminal incidents in Bangladesh.
The 150-page report includes recommendations aimed at preventing similar violence in the future. While the Bangladesh government is not obligated to implement these suggestions, the report could serve as credible evidence in legal proceedings against members of the Awami League accused of fascist activities.
In the last week of January, the UN team sent its final draft to the interim government for feedback and the government gave its response in the same week.
The UN fact finding team has based its report on the videos and other evidences provided by the government, and UN-conducted interviews. Many of the evidences were simply people’s statements, and incomplete data, for which the UN has asked the government to further investigate relevant incidents.
