Power price hike in March

DHAKA: The government is going to increase again the price of electricity at retail consumer level in March. The legal process of hiking the price will begin from Tuesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also ruling Awami League president, has already given nod in principle regarding the matter.

A competent source confirmed the matter to banglanews.

On February 6, the premier attended the ministry of the Energy & Mineral Resources affairs while ministry high-ups placed logics of power price hike to her.

After getting the nod from the Prime Minister, the ministry started taking quick steps to hike the price of electricity.

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) suggested price hiking by 10.50 percent, Rural Electrification Board (REB) 12.58 percent, Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) 15.90 percent and West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCO) 8.51 percent.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission member Dr Selima Mahmud told banglanews: “It cannot be said right now whether the price of electricity is being increased.”
