Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that the Election Commission (EC) is working to ensure voting rights for expatriates in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, even if on a limited scale.
He also said that political parties' support is crucial for successful implementation.
Speaking at a seminar on Tuesday (April 29) at the Election Commission Auditorium, Nasir Uddin said discussions with institutions like BUET, DUET, and MIST, along with international firms, are underway to develop a feasible system.
The plan must be cost-effective, practical, and based on the country’s socio-economic realities, he added.
The CEC emphasized the need to at least start the process, mentioning that even neighboring India has yet to introduce such a system.
Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah said expatriates make up about 10% of the electorate, while EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to a fair and inclusive election.
The seminar was attended by representatives from various political parties, civil society, and the media.
