Chief Adviser to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has assured that no actions harmful to the country will take place under his watch.
"As long as I am here, no work that will harm the country will be done," Dr. Yunus was quoted as saying during a meeting with political parties on Sunday night, according to his press secretary, Shafiqul Alam.
Dr. Yunus, a Nobel Laureate, reportedly expressed concern over the ongoing political unrest following the ban on the Awami League's activities, which he described as a “war-like situation.”
“We are in the middle of a major war. After the ban on the Awami League, efforts are underway to destabilize the country. We must protect ourselves from this,” he was quoted as saying.
The CA underscored the need for national unity and political consensus to overcome the crisis.
“They [the opposition] cannot accept what has happened. We need to be rescued from division. There must be consensus. As a self-respecting nation, we must continue moving forward. I found the courage to bring everyone to the table,” he said.
Dr. Yunus also acknowledged the challenges facing the interim administration and the importance of credible elections. “I will feel guilty if I cannot hold free and fair elections. I’ve been given a significant opportunity as a result of the coup. The country is facing internal and external threats amid the political upheaval and the banning of the Awami League. There is a deliberate attempt to push us into collapse and reverse our progress.”
He warned of conspiracies aiming to return the nation to a state of “slavery,” adding: “Those who are plotting against us want to see the country fail. But rest assured, as long as I am here, I will not allow anything that harms the country.”
