Major developments expected within week: Chief Prosecutor Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam has said that investigation reports on several cases of enforced disappearances allegedly committed during the tenure of the previous Awami League government will be submitted within a week.

Speaking to reporters at the ICT premises on Monday (October 6), Tajul Islam said, “I already mentioned yesterday that within this week, you will see developments in many of these disappearance cases. A number of incidents are being finalised — you will see them very soon.”

Declining to provide further details at this stage, he added, “We are not making any specific comment on this matter today.”

Addressing concerns about delays in the tribunal’s proceedings, the Chief Prosecutor said that the ongoing submission of formal charges in various cases demonstrates progress. “The required time for investigations has passed. Now, one formal charge after another is being submitted as the reports come in. The trials have formally begun, and many cases are in their final stages,” he explained.

He reaffirmed that the tribunal remains committed to delivering justice for the victims of wartime atrocities and crimes against humanity. “The nation has long awaited justice for those who committed heinous murders, genocide, and crimes against humanity. The tribunal is on the right path, and I am hopeful that these trials will be completed within a timeframe that meets public expectations.”

When asked about the progress of the case involving Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Tajul Islam said, “As we’ve said before, not everything will happen all at once — it will proceed step by step. These cases are reaching maturity, and in due time, you will see the results. Everyone will have to face justice. No one will escape or receive impunity. Justice always takes its own course.”

‘Key Disappearance Cases Near Completion’

Regarding the progress of the disappearance investigations, he reiterated, “As I said before, you will see many developments within this week. We are not discussing details now.”

Asked whether the investigations were complete, he replied, “There are many disappearance cases. While not all are finished, reports on several major cases will be submitted this week. These are complex cases, so we are meticulously verifying every detail. Inshallah, you will have the reports within this week.”

When asked about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, identified as a key accused in some of the complaints, the Chief Prosecutor said briefly, “You will see the rest in due time.”
