1 more held over JMB snatching

DHAKA: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained one more member of Jamaatul Mujahidin Bangladesh (JMB) on Friday night for his alleged involvement in the snatching of three condemned militants from a prison van in Trishal.

The detainee is identified as Khorshed Alam, 30.

Sources said that conducting a special drive the JMB member was held from Konabari area of Gazipur district.

Confirming the matter RAB-1 Operations Officer Mostak Sarkar told banglanews, “The detained JMB man was directly involved with the snatching incident and RAB was monitoring his activities. At one stage acting on information RAB in a night drive held him from the area.”

Earlier on April 30, RAB detained eight people for their suspected involvement in the snatching incident.

On February 23, a group of JMB men attacked a prison van with guns and bombs, and snatched away three JMB convicts, killing one policeman and injuring two others on February 23.

Two of the freed convicts -- Rakibul Hasan Russel and Salahuddin Salehin alias Sunny --were on death row. The other -- Jahidul Islam alias Bomaru Mizan-- was serving life term.

Hours after the attack, Mizan was captured from Tangail and later killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police.
