DHAKA: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will interrogate five people including police Sub-Inspector (SI) Manzurul Islam following the remand order of court over the sensational embezzlement of smuggled gold bars from the city’s Rampura area.

ACC is allowed to grill them anytime as the court has passed an order in this regard, ACC sources said.

Another source of ACC said that the five accused will be interrogated within a week for their alleged involvement in stealing the gold bars.

ACC sources also claimed that some high officials of police might be involved in the misappropriation of the gold bars.

On the other hand, the court granted a remand plea for accused SI Monzurul Islam, police constables Akash Chowdhury and Wahedul Islam, police source Mahfuz Alam Rony and a local resident M Sajib Sikdar.

Earlier on April 27, ACC grilled four police officials of Rampura Thana including Officer-in-Charge of the thana Kripa Sindubala for the sake of investigation.

After that ACC interrogated 14 detective policemen as part of an investigation of the case.

On April 1, detective police in separate drives arrested the three policemen and their informer with 149 gold bars from Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Bogra.

According to the case statement, SI Manzurul and his patrol team, were on duty at Balurmath in Banasree area of the city on March 13. At that time, they chased a microbus on suspicion and later found the vehicle abandoned. They brought the vehicle to the police station and filed a General Dairy.

On March 16, two individuals named Samir Biswas and Jahid Hossain came to the police station for the vehicle.

Later, police detained them and detected them to be professional gold smugglers. They transported 235 gold bars through the microbus, police said.

However, police could only recover 70 gold bars from the abandoned vehicle. On March 18, a case was filed in this regard with Rampura police station.

On interrogation by DB men, the detainees confessed to them that there had been 235 gold bars in the vehicle. Then the detectives interrogated SI Manzurul and his patrol team who confessed to them that they had misappropriated the gold bars.

Later, the detectives recovered 149 of the missing gold bars from different parts of the city following the disclosure of the detained policemen of the spots where they kept hidden the gold bars.

ACC Commissioner (Investigation) M Shahabuddin Chuppu confirmed the matter to banglanews.
