Committee for broadcast policy act soon

DHAKA: Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu hoped that a committee for the broadcast policy act would be formed within a month.

A commission would also be formed soon after the act, the minister added.

Inu made the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting with Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) leaders, an organization of the owners of private TV channels, in his ministry office on Tuesday afternoon.

President of ATCO Mosaddek Hossain Falu of NTV said they discussed on the criticism and questions on the draft of broadcast policy raised in society.

They also demanded the government an independent broadcast commission within a short time.

General Secretary of the organization Shykh Seraj of Channel-i said, “Our main claim is to include significant number of ATCO representatives and neutral member in the commission”.

The minister also gave his moral support on the demands, Seraj added.

Inu said the ATCO representatives’ role will be very important in the upcoming commission. So, their position will be valuable in the commission.

Replying to a query about when the commission will be active, the minister said “It will depend on the efficiency of the committee”.

“The previous governments failed to format any broadcast policy, but the incumbent Hasina-led government is going to present a modern and efficient broadcast policy,” he added.

According to him, the government has plans to hand over the power of information ministry regarding the broadcast to the commission.

The minister expected that the broadcast policy will be an outstanding document. It will ensure the rights of people.
